S:2 E:42 John Dedakis: From Journalist to Novelist!
After 45 years in journalism (25 at CNN), interviewing presidents (Reagan and Carter) and famous people, John DeDakis has channeled his personal Journey with grief and loss into six political thrillers which has him also in demand as a speaker. Combine this with his love of the arts and the art form of jazz in particular and you’ve got yourself a powerhouse episode which inspired this musical performance of Ricks own composition Altered Impressions which he wrote as an extension to John’s personal request of the classic by Miles Davis “So What”.
Joining us on our 42nd Episode of our 2nd Season journalist, novelist, and writing coach John DeDakis. John is a former editor on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
During John’s 45-year career in journalism, he was a White House correspondent during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. John is the author of six award-winning mystery-suspense-thriller novels, plus he’s a manuscript editor and motivational speaker.
John’s specialty is helping wannabe writers become published authors. He also inspires people struggling with grief to use writing as a way to find healing.
Personal experience is the grist of fiction. Budding novelists are taught to “write what you know.” In John’s case, he knows journalism, and he knows grief and loss.
During his 45 years in journalism (25 at CNN), he’s interviewed presidents (Reagan and Carter), famous people (Alfred Hitchcock), covered the White House, and been tear-gassed covering a riot.
In his personal life, he’s lost my sister to suicide and his youngest son to a heroin overdose.
All of those experiences are baked into the six political thrillers he’s written. Journalism and grief are backdrops and themes that make up the life of his protagonist, Lark Chadwick, a strong-willed and strong-minded twenty-something young woman.
His first traditionally published novel came out 20 years ago. It took him 10 years to find an agent. During that time, the novel went through 14 major revisions, and his agent is the 39th agent he queried. That learning experience led to a second career as a manuscript editor and one-on-one writing coach.
Dedakis is also a keynote speaker and workshop leader. He inspires people who are struggling with grief to use writing as a way to heal.
